When I started betting NBA games seriously, my process looked like this: check the win-loss record, glance at points per game, and make a decision. It took about two minutes per game and produced results that were almost exactly as bad as you would expect from a two-minute process. The day I discovered Net Rating — a single number that told me more about a team’s quality than any combination of basic stats — was the day my spreadsheet started turning from red to black.

The NBA generated over 1.3 billion hours of broadcast viewing this season, and embedded in every one of those hours is a mountain of data. Possession counts, shot locations, defensive matchups, lineup combinations. All of it is compiled, analysed, and published for free on multiple platforms. The information asymmetry that once existed between professional analysts and casual bettors has collapsed. The gap now is not access — it is application. Most bettors have the data in front of them and do not know which numbers actually move the needle.

Net Rating: The Single Best Team-Level Metric

Net Rating is the difference between a team’s Offensive Rating and Defensive Rating, expressed per 100 possessions. A team that scores 112 points per 100 possessions and allows 108 has a Net Rating of +4. It is the purest single measure of how good a team actually is, stripped of pace, schedule strength, and luck.

Why is this better than win-loss record? Because win-loss records are contaminated by close-game variance. A team that wins eight games by one or two points looks impressive in the standings but is probably overperforming its true quality. Net Rating catches that — their point differential per 100 possessions tells a more honest story than their record. Over the course of an NBA season, Net Rating converges toward a team’s “true” level faster than any other metric, usually within the first 20 to 25 games.

For betting, I use Net Rating in two ways. First, as a team-quality filter: any team with a Net Rating of +5 or higher is genuinely elite, and any team below -5 is genuinely poor. Second, as a matchup tool: the difference in Net Rating between two opponents is a strong predictor of the point spread. In fact, if you divide the Net Rating difference by a factor of roughly 1.5 and add home-court advantage (about 2.5 points), you get a spread estimate that is surprisingly close to the bookmaker’s line. When my estimate diverges from the posted spread by two or more points, I investigate further.

The Four Factors Framework for NBA Betting

Net Rating tells you who is better. The Four Factors tell you why. Developed by basketball analyst Dean Oliver, the framework identifies four things that determine whether a team wins or loses: effective field goal percentage (eFG%), turnover rate, offensive rebounding rate, and free-throw rate. Every basketball game is essentially a competition across these four dimensions.

170 million viewers watched NBA games this season, but I would wager that fewer than 1% of NBA bettors routinely check the Four Factors before placing a bet. That is a remarkable information gap.

Effective field goal percentage adjusts for the extra value of three-pointers. A team shooting 45% from the field but hitting a high volume of threes will have an eFG% above 50%, reflecting the true efficiency of their shot selection. For betting, eFG% is the single most important of the four factors — it explains roughly 40% of the variance in game outcomes. When two teams meet, comparing their offensive eFG% against the opponent’s defensive eFG% (how well they contest shots) gives you the clearest picture of who has the shooting-efficiency edge.

Turnover rate measures how often a team gives the ball away per possession. A high-turnover team generates fewer shot attempts, which means fewer points. More importantly, turnovers lead to fast-break points for the opponent — the highest-efficiency scoring opportunity in basketball. I pay closest attention to turnover rate when a team with ball-security issues faces a defence that ranks in the top ten for forcing turnovers. That matchup amplifies the turnover problem and tilts the spread.

Offensive rebounding rate and free-throw rate are the secondary factors. They matter less than eFG% and turnovers, but in close matchups — where the top two factors are roughly even — they become the tiebreakers. A team that crashes the offensive glass extends possessions and gets extra scoring chances. A team that draws fouls generates free points. Both factors favour physical, aggressive teams, which is worth noting when you see a matchup between a finesse-first team and a physical one.

Free Sources for NBA Advanced Stats

Everything I have described is available at zero cost. The NBA’s own stats platform publishes team and player advanced metrics with daily updates. Several independent sites clean, organise, and contextualise the data — offering custom splits, rolling averages, and matchup-level projections that take the raw numbers and turn them into betting-ready insights.

My daily routine uses three sources. One for team-level advanced metrics (Net Rating, pace, eFG%, Four Factors). One for player-level data (usage rate, minutes, individual efficiency). And one for schedule context (rest days, travel, back-to-back flags). The entire pre-match research process takes about 20 minutes per game — less once you have the rhythm down — and it gives me a far richer picture than any combination of basic stats ever could.

A practical tip for getting started: do not try to learn all the metrics at once. Spend a week just looking at Net Rating for every NBA team. Rank them, compare the rankings to the standings, and notice which teams are better (or worse) than their record suggests. Once Net Rating feels intuitive, add eFG% and turnover rate to your routine. After a month of layering one metric at a time, you will have a data-driven framework that operates naturally — not because you memorised formulas, but because you understand what the numbers reveal about how basketball actually works.

What is the most reliable advanced stat for predicting NBA winners?

Net Rating — the difference between Offensive Rating and Defensive Rating per 100 possessions — is the single most reliable team-level predictor. It captures both offensive and defensive quality in a pace-independent format. Over a full season, Net Rating correlates more strongly with future results than win-loss record, point differential, or any individual box-score stat.

How far back should I look at advanced stats — 10 games or the full season?

A blended approach works best. The last 10 to 15 games capture recent form, lineup changes, and tactical adjustments. The full-season figure provides stability and context. Weighting recent form at 60% and the season-long average at 40% has produced the most accurate projections in my experience. Early in the season, lean more heavily on the full sample; late in the season, lean toward recent form.
